These are not actually items I would have ever purchased or sought out.  However, they were found in an op shop recently and for $3 for the pair, were difficult to pass up (apart from a Muuto pepper grinder and rock salt, I actually don’t have any salt and pepper dispensers).

They are good things though, I’ve decided.  They don’t demand attention on the table but when you do notice them, they are quite sweet with the way they are designed to rock back and forth and then right themselves.  They are also beautifully made.  Designed by Søren Ulrik Petersen in 1998 for Georg Jensen, they are made from ABS plastic and stainless steel.  The base is quite heavy and solid to enable the wobbling and righting to take place.

Interestingly, the designer says that he always designs objects with the tactile requirements of someone with a visual impairment in mind.  He believes that this means that objects should be rounded and approachable, not stiff and square.

Again, not something I would have normally been attracted to, but being a tad opportunistic given the price, has also meant that I’ve developed a quiet appreciation for them over the past few months.  They were truly a good find.
